Thoughts on change management in BPM

I was recently part of an interview on change management in BPM for ebizQ. I also talked about change management last year in an interview from an event on BPM. I think both posts support my case for change being a part of life, something to be embraced, and most of all, something you just have to face with an action plan.

Alan Earls of ebizQ quotes in his article:

Change management, as Gartner analyst Elise Olding has pointed out, may not be too far from being an oxymoron. But change is inherent in every process-improvement effort. So is it really possible to reduce, or even eliminate, disruption in BPM?

“The short answer is that you can’t minimize disruption if you want serious process improvement,” says Robby Slaughter, principal at Slaughter Development, a consultancy that focuses on organizational change.

My response to this is: Yep, Your disruption mileage may vary. and Agree. BPM is all about change, and when you consider change is mostly a social activity that has less to do with technology and process than it has to do with people, the combination of change management and BPM (and Social BPM) are really your best platform for change.

Let’s face it, impact and disruption will be a part of any organizational shift – let’s acknowledge it and move on to real change (no matter how uncomfortable that can be).
